Importing Question

Postby AmberJ on Sun Aug 02, 2009 7:16 pm

One of my boarders is considering importing a horse from overseas (New Zealand) but has no idea where to begin. Does anyone have a good local contact?

I've imported from the US, but never overseas and I think the process is very different. I've heard good things about Bob from Overseas Horse Transport (http://www.horsecanada.com).

What is the quarantine time for New Zealand?

I think the quarantine is short because New Zealand is an isolated island, but it looks like she'll have to import through the US into Canada so that will complicate things

I've heard there's been problems coming across the US border lately for anyone who doesn't have a bill of sale and printed ad for the horse they bought (especially if the price is low).

To say the least! LOL

You could try contacting some barns that regularly import horses to see who they use. I know Tackaberry Farms in AB does imports from Europe fairly often (or at least they used to).
